Differences between the 50's style body and the 60's. The 1960's style alder guitar body is pictured on the left and in the closeup of the control cavity and bottom pickup. Basic outside shape is same size (camera angle below makes them appear different sizes, but they're the same) 60's control cavity has an extra bump to allow for an add'l pickup screw hole in that area. The worm hole in the bottom pickup routing has an "L" shape. The 1950's style has a straighter worm hole and the smoother shape of the control cavity routing is made for an 8 hole pickguard. On the back, the side cut on the 1950's goes higher up on the horn and the cut is further in toward the center and is a little more exaggerated..

Wood Choice: Alder is most often used for opaque finishes and a 2 or 3 tone Sunburst. It is not suitable for some semi-transparent vintage style finishes, such as the Mary Kaye blonde. The natural color of the wood may make semitransparent white finishes appear to have a pinkish undertone. Swamp ash has more pronounced grain and often has interesting patterns in the wood, it looks great with a see-through finish. For a smooth opaque finish, it will need to be grain filled before painting. Swamp ash is usually slighlty lighter in weight than alder. The less dense wood will cause the finished guitar to sound "brighter" than a guitar made with an alder body. GRGuitars uses only locally purchased, first quality, kiln dried, Northwest grown alder.

Our alder & swamp ash guitar bodies are bench made, not produced by computer operated CNC machines. The alder is locally grown and milled. Swamp ash comes from southern USA. Each body is made individually to provide the vintage vibe. The neck pocket is routed to standard Fender specs for necks listed on the Ready to Ship page or any new licensed by Fender necks. Most used necks will work except the Made in Mexico Fender's which usually have a wider heel. Our blueprints for the guitar body were established by taking measurements from dozens of original 1960's guitar bodies that came through our shop for restoration or refinishing.

Alder 1960's style double cutaway black lacquer over a vintage style 3 tone sunburst. Weight about 4 lbs 3 oz. Bench made in our shop. The finish was first applied as a Sunburst, then the black finish was sprayed over it. The underlying Sunburst can be seen where the top finish is chipped or rubbed away. A very few of this type finish can be found on originals-it is thought that they were painted over either because the Sunburst was not perfect or there were too many on hand and a solid color was needed. Vintage Style Tremolo Bridges
Our DC guitar bodies are routed for vintage 6 hole tremolo bridges. The standard style Strat tremolo with 2 mounting screw-in posts will also work-only change needed would be to enlarge the two outside holes for the mounting posts. You can also request an unfinished guitar body to be drilled for a modern tremolo.

Vintage tremolo & non-trem (hardtail) bridge for Strat are normally either 2 1/4" or 2 3/16" spacing (measured center to center of the two outside string holes). Bridge spacing indicates how close the outside strings are to the edge of the neck as the strings go up the neck.

How to measure Strat bridge string spacing:

Remove back trem cover from guitar body. Measure center of one outside string hole to center of the other outside hole. The block shown above measures 2 3/16" -Strat tremolo bridges with string spacing of 2 1/4" or 2 3/16" are interchangable.
